Samurai vs. Snake

Samurai vs. Snake

Thunderbolt Tattoo Atlanta – Shortly after Joe Vegas outlined this piece, the client – Jonathan, moved to Madagascar. Via email, a plan was made for a marathon 12 hour tattoo session to complete the tattoo when Jonathan came back to the States for the Hollidays. Vegas finished the piece in 11 hours (a new record for Joe) leaving the artist quite fatigued. Jonathan remained unflinching during the entire process, crediting a lunch with extra carbs to increase stamina. The tattoo features a Chinese hero, Ding Desun, gripping a sword with both hands as he thrusts it into the gaping mouth of a giant snake that is attacking him. The design was taken from an 1829 woodblock print by Vegas’ “2nd or 3rd favorite Japanese artist” Utagawa Kunioshi. Giving the importance of the piece, that tattoo “just had to get finished” no matter what. Typically Vegas’ tattoo sessions last only 3 hours. Hats off to you Jonathan!
